Genealogists are more than familiar with passenger lists. Innumerable hours have been devoted to studying immigrant arrivals in cities like New York City, Boston, and Baltimore. However, that is only half of the puzzle. What about where they left from? What about those lists? Well, you may be in luck! Senior Librarian Logan Knight will explore the large collection of passenger lists from the port of Hamburg, Germany. Jewish-Americans can really benefit from these lists as at least one million Jewish people immigrated through Hamburg. Please join us to learn some tricks of the trade to navigate this invaluable resource and learn more about the immigrant experience of the time.

Logan Knight hails from Henderson, Kentucky. He graduated from Hanover College in 2010 before going on to pursue his master’s degree in history at Indiana State University. Logan went on to serve as a Special Collections Librarian for more than six years at the Vigo County Public Library and received his MLS from IUPUI in the summer of 2021. He has been with the center since April of 2023. Logan’s genealogical specialty is passenger lists and the various documentation thereof. He has a passion for entwining history and genealogy to provide context for both individual and family stories. By using his knowledge of history, Logan hopes to make our ancestors come alive as people and not just lines on a sheet of paper. He most recently presented at the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies in August of 2025.
