Alex Denysenko will provide a brief history of the former Ekaterinoslav, Kharkov, Kherson and Tavride gubernias of Czarist Russia, then review the many significant archival collections available there for Jewish historical and genealogical research. He will also discuss the challenges involved in using these records -- such as reading old Russian handwriting and understanding archaic terms, acronyms, and unfamiliar Jewish terms. Alex Denysenko graduated from Lviv State University and studied at Yad Vashem's International School of Holocaust Studies in Jerusalem. Since 1991, he has worked as a researcher, genealogist and tour guide, specializing in Central European Jewish history. Based in Lviv, Ukraine, he has worked with archives in Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and other countries.
