JEWISH CEMETERIES OF LONG ISLAND

If you were asked about Jewish cemeteries on Long Island, no doubt you would immediately think about the cluster of cemeteries along Wellwood Avenue in Pinelawn. However, did you know that there are a dozen other “local” Jewish cemeteries on Long Island? Many of these are owned, operated and maintained by individual synagogues. Some of these synagogues have been merged into successor congregations, but the location of the original cemeteries evidence the history of some of Long Island’s oldest Jewish communities. (We hope to expand on the history of Jewish communities on Long Island in subsequent articles.)

As a service to our Society members, and to the greater Jewish genealogical community, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island (JGSLI) has endeavored to index all of the Jewish Cemeteries of Long Island. For the “local” cemeteries, we have also photographed all headstones and recorded all the burials into a database that has been contributed to JewishGen’s JOWBR (JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry) project. Please visit http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/ to search the JOWBR database.
